(No. 45.) Sir,
No. 1.
Sir Edward Grey to Sir J. Jordun
Foreign Office, February 4, 1907. I HAVE received your despatch No. 512 of the 7th December, 1906, forwarding copies of correspondence with His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton respecting the unsatisfactory manner in which the improvement of the accommodation for shipping in the harbour of Canton is being carried out by the local Chinese authorities.
I concur in the approval which you have expressed to Mr. Mansfield of his action in addressing a representation to the Viceroy, requesting that the work on the portion of the Canton River Bund which lies in the vicinity of the British wharves should be done under the supervision of a foreign surveyor. And I request that the matter may not be lost sight of, but that Mr. Mansfield's recommendation may be pressed with the Chinese authorities.

I am, &c.
(Signed)
E. GREY.
